am I really missing out by not owning a smart phone

not a good looking one, one of those internet friendly jobs

will my life be enriched by entering the modern technology era

I doubt it Mugs. I find mine very useful when I'm bored in the car at work and I can do some surfing or e-mails, but if you're happy with the computer at work and don't find yourself needing the internet while out and about, then don't bother. I'll let you have my iPhone when I upgrade next time if you want - not til Feb next year though.

We have both Apple and B'Berry [sound like a fruitier!!] at our work....both have their place.

Certainly the Apple4 is good on graphics/pics etc.
Down side is its arial, its stiil not good.

B'Berry is loaded with all our PDF docs and it very good and fast at delivering both those and Word Doc on the fly.
Down side...image files are still clonky/rigid.

My vote for today, probably Apple4?

I personally use B'Berry and Im waiting for the PlayBook to be released with 4G.

As an aside, I'd like a phone that carries multiple cards so that I/we can alocate different numbers to different companies all via one phone.

These fruit based electronics have got a lot to answer for. When I started with the mobile the answerphone became redundant, now I've got a mobile, everyone at work sends me an email then calls to ask if I received the bleeding email, " NO" says I, "why don't you ask me the questions on the phone now that we're talking?"
Devils work, you'll never know peace with one of those buggers, and there is a significant risk you'll become an apple-nerd and never cease to bore the arse of folks telling them how wonderful your fucking apps are. Say hello to an I phone and goodbye to the real world, the choice is yours.
